To those of you whose state/country doesn’t require emissions testing, count your blessings. Here in the Democratic People’s Republic of Maryland, you have to get your vehicle tested every 2 years. A couple months ago, I received a letter in the mail stating that I needed to take my car in by April 6. I, being the responsible adult I am, stuck the letter on my fridge with a smilie face magnet and promptly forgot about it. The letter became more of a decoration than a reminder, and lo and behold, I missed the deadline. Now I’ve received an email telling me that I MUST get my emissions testing done by May 6 or my registration will be suspended. Oh, and it’ll now cost me $30 rather than the going rate of $15. Now to print that email out and stick it on the fridge...

Democractic People’s Republic of Maryland actually cares about the air people breath. Unlike the other DPR of Korea.

It’ll cost you $29. Also enjoy reading your REGISTRATION SUSPENSION NOTICE that you’ll get after you pass emissions because Lady Maryland is the worst.

Comparing Maryland to a nation that executes dissidents via anti-aircraft gun when they dont sentence them to hard labor over 30 bucks is...kind of a stretch, don’t you think?

Maryland is the suck.
I thankfully got my testing done by a lady from Minnesota, so we got a chance to bash this place together while using our awesome Midwestern Accents. Took less than 10 minutes on my car outside of Annapolis.
It is a racket. I can’t wait to leave here.

I dun know, 15 bucks is pretty cheap.

Just a little hyperbole to get your morning started. :)

It’s $35 in MA, every year. At least they don’t suspend your registration for it. Just as well - my Comanche has been through a few owners and hasn’t been inspected since 2010. Needless to say I’m not driving it - especially with that nasty tapping under the valve cover...

Emissions test are done every year here in Tennessee... But only for like 6 or so counties but we happen to live in one of them.

Just like how they care that people don’t speed, so they set up speeding cameras every quarter mile in PG county? Of course, I’m just poking fun. I generally like MD. We have some bomb crab cakes and the coolest flag in the Union!

YEAH WELL AT LEAST YOU CAN GET ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS FOR SALE IN NORTH KOREA! I tell ya Maryland is running a scheme with these 730-day emissions inspections! Making 0.12% of their state budget off these inspections! Damn eco-nazis!

Virginia’s like that. Only the DC suburbs have emissions testing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hampton Roads starts doing it in my lifetime.

The standards are so lax here it almost doesn’t matter anyways. Our ‘75 Land Cruiser passes as a ‘75 even with a ‘70 small block in there. It has a engine conversion plaque that California took and Tennessee won’t for some reason but it works. When we put the 2uz in there it should be the cleanest running FJ40 ever haha.

I know this feel in NE Ohio. Out of 88 counties in the state, I live in one of the 7 that does emissions testing. Luckily our testing locations have a self-serve kiosk that does all the testing through the OBDII port, and I can pretty much go whenever I want. Ours doesn’t usually cost anything, as I believe ours is paid for through the good-ol’ tobacco settlement.

We have emissions testing in pa but it's done with yearly inspections. If you can't pass it it is only like a 15$ or 30$ ticket if the cop notices you don't have a sticker.

I live in a state that does emissions testing and safety inspections and I’ve no problem with it.

NC has annual emissions inspections. It’s oBD 2 though, so easy to bypass.

Thank God only like 5 counties in VA have emissions testing. Used to live in one of them and was so glad when I moved

Certainly! The moral of the story here is really that I’m forgetful, not that Maryland is out for my wallet.

$15? Dude that’s primo. In Canada it can cost around 50-80. UNLESS you drive something that’s pre-1987 and then the rules don’t apply. Another reason to drive a hooptie.

That’s just what they want you to say...first vehicle emissions, next it’ll be human emissions! Oh the humanity!
How’s the saying go, “First they came for the hoopties, and I did not speak out - because I was not a hooptie.”

No, I know the price isn’t bad. Just stinks that my forgetfulness cost me!

Ah that does sting. But any problem that can be solved by $30 isn’t that bad

New York. $37. Every year unless emissions exexempt, which is the first 3 years after the model year of the car (i.e. until 2012 for a 2009) or 25 years old. Then it’s 10 bux. Still every year though.

Even though I no longer live there (although I might be moving back), I’m still pissed at California for stopping the rolling exemption and their insistance on maintaining all of the original emissions equipment.
Years ago I wanted to save an E12 530i that I found, but I didn’t want to deal with the crappy thermal reactors that it was equipped with from the factory (they were almost impossible to find, and even when new weren’t terribly effective). I wanted to put newer, more efficient catalytic converters on it, but I couldn’t easily get an exemption FOR A MODIFICATION THAT WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY LOWERED THE EMISSIONS! Way to go, clueless bureaucrats - enforce the letter of the law, not the spirit of it. And so another classic BMW was sent to the scrapyard, never to dirty the air again, which is probably what they wanted in the first place.

In TX, we have to pass emissions every year as part of our annual vehicle inspection. My van is due, and it’s got a CEL for some evap issue and they won’t even scope it if the CEL is on. So I’ve got to get that sorted by the end of the month.

I’m not sure what Virginia’s standards are, but the Carfax on my ‘91 Prelude says with its old engine it wouldn’t pass emissions. It has another ‘91 engine now, but I don’t live in an emissions area and even if I did it has antqiue plates anyway, which means it’s exempt.

Do you not like having breathable air? I do.
I also like having vehicles that are old enough to be exempt from emission testing. I live in Missouri and the cutoff is 96 now (odb2) for passenger vehicles, none for motorcycles, of vehicles with a gross weight above 8k.
It also costs me about $80 when I have to get my safety/emissions done.

I would *like* to have breathable air, but:
